Our sanctuary is home to several species of small primates, each with unique needs and personalities:
Spider Monkeys (Genus: Ateles)
Spider monkeys are known for their long limbs and prehensile tails, which they use as a fifth limb to swing through trees. Highly intelligent and social, they are native to the rainforests of Central and South America. At Jocko, they thrive in enclosures designed for climbing and exploration.
Squirrel Monkeys (Genus: Saimiri)
Squirrel monkeys are tiny, agile monkeys often recognized by their bright yellow limbs and expressive faces. Native to the forests of South and Central America, these monkeys live in large social groups and are constantly on the move, foraging for insects and fruit.
Macaques (Genus: Macaca)
Macaques are highly adaptable and intelligent primates found across Asia and parts of North Africa. Known for their strong social bonds and complex group dynamics, macaques live in large troops led by dominant individuals. These monkeys are often characterized by their stocky build, expressive faces, and short tails. Macaques are incredibly resourceful and can thrive in a variety of environments, from dense forests to urban areas. They are omnivorous, eating a diet of fruits, seeds, small animals, and even human-provided food in some regions. Macaques are a fascinating species, showcasing remarkable problem-solving skills and strong social behavior.
Capuchin Monkeys (Genus: Cebus & Sapajus)
Capuchins are small, curious primates with distinctive facial markings and highly developed brains, making them skilled at tool use and problem-solving. Found in Central and South America, capuchins live in social groups and are known for their inquisitive nature. Highly intelligent and curious, capuchins are always on the move, investigating their surroundings and participating in enrichment activities that challenge their problem- solving skills. At Jocko, we prioritize mental engagement to ensure our capuchins are happy and healthy.
